Workshop with a rural school - Brixham, Spacex

As part of enquire phase 3 Spacex undertook a series of workshops with a group of yr 9 students from Brixham College. The students worked with 3 different professional artists and explored the different roles of gallery staff and the purpose of a contemporary art gallery, taught a group of yr 7 and yr 8 students from their school and undertook a range of practical tasks in a variety of mediums. Students were encouraged by the artists they worked with to set their own agenda, make their own explorations and work as a group to produce artworks. The workshops culminated in an exhibition designed by the students at the school’s gallery space called Cloud 9.

Student comments on the workshops:

'We worked with lots of different adults and children to try and find out what art is and how other people interpret it. Also to keep an open mind whilst thinking about art. In addition we did lots of practical work too which was really good, like working with the artists and the other students.'

'When I taught year 7 and 8 I was able to work with them at the same time discussing thoughts and it was lovely introducing them to activities. When they enjoyed it, it made me feel proud and both theirs and my confidence went up a level.'

'I think that the workshops will help me with my school work because, I have not only learnt lots about art and its different forms but I have learnt more about working together as a group and what happens if people don’t put work in.'
